Tucked into the hills of southwest Portland, Tryon Creek State Natural Area is a rare gift — 658 acres of old-growth forest and second-growth woodland thriving right inside a major city. It’s the only Oregon state park located entirely within a metropolitan area, offering a genuine wilderness escape just minutes from downtown.

The park’s centerpiece is Tryon Creek itself, a year-round stream that carved the canyon running through the heart of the natural area. Eight miles of hiking trails wind through stands of western red cedar, Douglas fir, and bigleaf maple, descending into the ravine and crossing the creek on wooden bridges. The 3.5-mile Tryon Creek Trail follows the water from end to end, while shorter loops like the Cedar Trail offer quick immersion in old forest. Mountain biking and horseback riding are permitted on designated trails, and the paved Bike Trail connects to nearby neighborhoods.

The Nature Center near the main entrance hosts exhibits, ranger programs, and a small bookshop — a solid starting point for families with kids. Spring brings an explosion of trillium that blankets the forest floor in white, drawing photographers and wildflower enthusiasts from across the region. The annual Trillium Festival in early April celebrates the bloom with guided walks and nature activities.

No camping is available here — this is a day-use natural area. Visit in late March through May for wildflowers, or in autumn when the maple canopy turns golden. The trails stay accessible year-round, though expect mud after Portland’s frequent rains.
