Government Island State Recreation Area

Sitting in the middle of the Columbia River between Portland and the Columbia River Gorge, Government Island is one of Oregon’s most unusual recreation areas — a 1,700-acre island accessible only by boat. That barrier to entry is exactly what makes it special. There are no roads, no developed campgrounds, and no crowds. Just sandbars, wetlands, cottonwood forests, and some of the best paddling water near a major metro area.

Most visitors arrive by kayak or canoe, launching from nearby boat ramps along Marine Drive or the Washington shore. The paddle over is short — often less than a mile — but it feels like crossing into a different world. Once on the island, you’ll find sandy beaches for picnicking, shallow channels perfect for exploring by boat, and surprisingly good wildlife viewing. Great blue herons, bald eagles, and osprey are common sights, especially along the quieter northern shoreline.

Primitive camping is allowed on the island’s sandbars during summer months, making it a fantastic option for an overnight paddling trip without driving hours from Portland. Pack everything in and out — there are no facilities.

Summer and early fall are the best times to visit, when water levels drop and expose wide, sandy beaches. Spring brings higher water and stronger currents, so plan accordingly. Winter access is possible but conditions can be challenging.

Government Island rewards the self-sufficient. If you’re willing to paddle there and bring what you need, you’ll find a wild, quiet escape hiding in plain sight of the city.
