Dabney State Recreation Area
Oregon (Portland/Columbia Gorge County)
Tucked along the banks of the Sandy River just east of Portland, Dabney State Recreation Area offers one of the most accessible outdoor escapes in the Columbia River Gorge corridor. The park sits where the Sandy River curves through a forested canyon, creating sandy beaches and calm pools that draw swimmers, anglers, and families looking for an easy day trip from the city.
The Sandy River is the main attraction here. In summer, the shallow stretches warm enough for wading and swimming, while deeper pools attract steelhead and salmon anglers in fall and winter. A well-maintained disc golf course winds through towering Douglas firs and big-leaf maples, making Dabney a local favorite for players of all skill levels. Picnic shelters and open grassy areas provide plenty of space for group gatherings, and short trails along the riverbank offer gentle walks beneath old-growth canopy.
Dabney is a day-use area only — there’s no camping on-site. For overnight stays, nearby Oxbow Regional Park or Ainsworth State Park provide campground options within a short drive.
The best time to visit is June through September, when the river runs low and warm enough for swimming and the disc golf course is at its best. Spring brings wildflowers and fewer crowds. Winter visitors will find solitude and prime fishing conditions, though rain gear is essential.
Expect a well-kept park with restrooms, ample parking, and a relaxed atmosphere — a genuine riverside retreat minutes from Portland’s eastern suburbs.
