Lewis and Clark State Recreation Site
Oregon (Portland/Columbia Gorge County)
About This Park
This recreation area is part of Sakakawea Lake
Lewis and Clark State Recreation Site sits along the Sandy River near Troutdale, Oregon, marking the spot where the Corps of Discovery camped in 1805-1806 on their historic journey to the Pacific. The park serves as a natural gateway to the Columbia River Gorge, just minutes from Portland’s eastern edge.
The Sandy River is the main draw here. Its cold, clear waters attract swimmers and waders during summer months, and the rocky shoreline provides easy access for fishing — steelhead and salmon runs bring anglers back seasonally. Shaded picnic areas with tables and shelters sit beneath a canopy of Douglas fir and bigleaf maple, making this one of the better spots in the Portland metro area for a riverside afternoon.
Short trails wind through the riparian forest along the riverbank, offering easy walking suitable for families. Birdwatchers will find great blue herons, osprey, and various songbirds along the water. The park connects to the larger Sandy River Delta trail system nearby, which adds miles of additional hiking and wildlife viewing.
Camping is not available at this site — it operates as a day-use area. For overnight stays, nearby Ainsworth State Park or Rooster Rock State Park offer options within the Gorge corridor.
The best time to visit is late June through September, when river levels drop and swimming conditions are ideal. Weekends draw crowds from Portland, so weekday visits offer a quieter experience. The park is open year-round, though winter months bring rain and limited facilities.
