Tucked along the banks of the Willamette River in West Linn, Mary S. Young State Recreation Area offers a surprisingly wild escape just minutes from downtown Portland. This forested day-use park draws hikers, dog owners, and nature lovers looking for a quick retreat without the drive to the coast or mountains.

The park’s trail system winds through second-growth Douglas fir and bigleaf maple forest, with paths ranging from easy riverside strolls to moderate woodland loops. Spring brings trillium and wildflower displays along the forest floor, while fall transforms the canopy into a patchwork of gold and amber. A dedicated off-leash dog area makes this one of the most popular spots in the Portland metro for four-legged companions — fenced and spacious enough for a real run.
