South Cape Beach State Park

Tucked along the southern shore of Mashpee on Cape Cod, South Cape Beach State Park offers 460 acres of pristine barrier beach, warm-water tidal flats, and salt marsh habitat that feels worlds away from the Cape’s busier stretches. The park sits where Waquoit Bay meets Nantucket Sound, creating a unique coastal landscape where beachgoers can walk for nearly a mile along soft sand with views stretching to Martha’s Vineyard on clear days.

The main draw here is the beach itself — a long, uncrowded crescent ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and shell collecting. The waters on the Sound side stay relatively warm through summer, making this one of the better swimming beaches on the Cape. Kayakers and paddleboarders launch from the calmer bay side, where the shallow flats teem with hermit crabs and shorebirds. Birders will find the salt marsh trails rewarding, particularly during fall migration when ospreys, piping plovers, and terns frequent the area.

A boardwalk trail winds through the dunes and marsh grass, offering an easy walk suitable for families. Fishing is popular along the shoreline, especially for striped bass and bluefish during summer runs.

Visit between late June and early September for the warmest water and longest days, though September brings thinner crowds and still-pleasant conditions. Arrive early on summer weekends — the parking lot fills by mid-morning. Facilities are basic: restrooms and a small parking area, but no concessions. Pack water, sunscreen, and a windbreak for breezy days.
