Manuel F. Correllus State Forest
Massachusetts (Dukes County)
Tucked into the heart of Martha’s Vineyard, Manuel F. Correllus State Forest covers 5,215 acres of pitch pine and scrub oak woodland — making it the largest single piece of conservation land on the island. While most visitors flock to the Vineyard’s beaches and harbor towns, this inland forest offers a quieter side of island life that rewards those who seek it out.
The forest is laced with miles of fire roads and trails open to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The flat-to-gently-rolling terrain makes it accessible for all fitness levels, and the sandy paths winding through dense pine groves feel a world apart from the coastal scenery just a few miles away. Birders come here for grassland species that thrive in the sandplain habitat, and the forest serves as critical protection for the island’s sole-charge aquifer — the drinking water supply for all six Vineyard towns.
Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are possible in winter, though conditions vary. Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable temperatures for trail use, while summer rides benefit from the canopy shade when beach crowds peak.
There are no developed campgrounds within the forest, so plan on lodging elsewhere on the island. Parking areas along Barnes Road and the Edgartown–West Tisbury Road provide the main access points.
Come here when you want the Vineyard without the postcard — just birdsong, pine-scented air, and sandy trails stretching out ahead of you.
