Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
Massachusetts (Barnstable County)
Tucked along the southern shore of Cape Cod, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve protects 110 acres of some of the most ecologically rich coastal habitat in New England. Where freshwater streams meet the saltwater of Nantucket Sound, the reserve encompasses barrier beaches, salt marshes, pine forests, and the pristine waters of Waquoit Bay itself — a living laboratory where science and natural beauty intersect.
What sets Waquoit Bay apart is its dual identity as both a protected research site and a place deeply accessible to visitors. The reserve’s trail system winds through pitch pine and oak woodlands before opening onto sweeping views of the bay and its barrier islands. Washburn Island, reachable only by boat, offers one of the few primitive camping experiences on Cape Cod — nine waterfront campsites available by reservation through the Massachusetts DCR, typically from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Kayaking and canoeing are the signature activities here. Paddling the calm, shallow waters of the bay reveals osprey nesting platforms, horseshoe crabs in the shallows, and salt marsh channels teeming with life. The reserve also hosts guided walks, children’s programs, and educational talks throughout the summer months.
Visit between late May and early October for the best conditions. July and August bring warm water and peak wildlife activity, while September offers quieter trails and spectacular fall light over the marshes. Come prepared for sun exposure on the beaches and mosquitoes along the woodland trails — and bring binoculars. The birding here is exceptional.
