Tucked into the rolling hills of Washtenaw County, Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve protects 1,122 acres of some of southern Michigan’s most ecologically significant landscapes. This joint state-county preserve safeguards a rare chain of glacial lakes, wetlands, and oak savannas — habitats that have largely vanished from the region’s agricultural lowlands.

The park’s centerpiece is Watkins Lake itself, a quiet, undeveloped kettle lake surrounded by marshland and upland forest. Unlike busier state parks, Watkins Lake feels genuinely wild. The trail system winds through prairie restorations, mature hardwood stands, and open meadows where wildflowers put on a show from late spring through early fall. Birders will find excellent diversity here — the mix of wetland and grassland habitat draws species uncommon elsewhere in southeast Michigan, including sandhill cranes and grassland sparrows.

Hiking and nature observation are the primary draws. The trails are mostly flat to gently rolling, making them accessible for families and casual walkers. Mountain biking and cross-country skiing are available on designated routes. Hunting is permitted in season on portions of the preserve.

The park is at its best from May through October, when the prairie plantings are in full bloom and the lake reflects the surrounding canopy. Fall color along the wooded trails is striking. Winter visits offer solitude and animal tracking opportunities.
