Waterloo State Recreation Area

Spanning over 20,000 acres across Jackson and Washtenaw counties, Waterloo State Recreation Area is Michigan’s largest state park — a sprawling patchwork of glacial lakes, rolling hardwood forests, and open meadows that feels genuinely wild despite sitting just an hour west of Detroit.

The landscape here was carved by glaciers, leaving behind dozens of kettle lakes, boggy wetlands, and surprising elevation changes that make every trail feel different from the last. The 47-mile Waterloo-Pinckney Trail draws serious hikers and backpackers, threading through oak-hickory forests and past quiet inland lakes where you might spot a great blue heron lifting off from the shallows. Mountain bikers, horseback riders, and cross-country skiers each have their own dedicated trail networks, keeping the place from feeling crowded even on busy weekends.

Swimming beaches at Big Portage Lake and Sugarloaf Lake offer cool relief in summer, while anglers work the shorelines for bass, bluegill, and pike. Hunters use the recreation area heavily in fall — it’s managed specifically for upland game and waterfowl.

The Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center makes a worthwhile stop, especially with kids, covering the area’s geology and natural history through hands-on exhibits.

Summer and early fall bring the best conditions, though spring wildflower season along the Bog Trail is quietly spectacular. Winter transforms the trails into a peaceful snow-covered network for skiing and snowshoeing.
