Tucked into the rolling farmland of Lenawee County, Lake Hudson State Recreation Area sprawls across nearly 2,800 acres of woods, wetlands, and open water in southeastern Michigan. The centerpiece is Lake Hudson itself — a 600-acre lake that draws anglers chasing bass, bluegill, and northern pike through every season.

What sets Lake Hudson apart is its quiet. Unlike Michigan’s busier lakefront parks, this recreation area feels genuinely remote despite sitting just an hour southwest of Ann Arbor. The lake’s no-wake zones keep things peaceful, making it ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing from small boats. Swimmers will find a sandy beach area near the day-use picnic grounds, and several miles of trails wind through hardwood forests and marshy lowlands where birders regularly spot herons, sandhill cranes, and migrating waterfowl.

The campground offers rustic and semi-modern sites nestled among mature trees, with enough spacing between neighbors that you can actually hear the loons at dusk. It fills on summer weekends but remains accessible midweek. Hunters use the area heavily during fall — the wetlands and upland fields support excellent waterfowl and small game hunting.

Visit in late May through September for swimming and paddling, or come in October when the hardwoods turn and the crowds thin out. Winter brings cross-country skiing and ice fishing for those willing to brave it.

A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. Arrive early on holiday weekends — parking at the beach fills fast.
