Pinckney State Recreation Area
Michigan (Livingston, Washtenaw County)
Sprawling across 11,000 acres of Livingston and Washtenaw County, Pinckney State Recreation Area is one of southeastern Michigan’s largest and most varied public lands. The landscape is a patchwork of rolling glacial hills, dense hardwood forests, marshes, and more than a dozen lakes and ponds — a remarkable amount of wild terrain just an hour from Detroit and Ann Arbor.
The trail system is the main draw. Over 40 miles of interconnected paths wind through the property, popular with hikers, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers depending on the season. The Potawatomi Trail, a challenging 17-mile loop through rugged terrain, is widely considered one of the best mountain biking routes in the Lower Peninsula. For something gentler, the Crooked Lake Trail offers a scenic 5-mile hike past quiet lakeshores and old-growth stands.
Water is everywhere here. Silver Lake, Halfmoon Lake, and Blind Lake all offer swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating. Anglers pull bass, bluegill, and pike from the quieter ponds tucked back in the woods.
Several rustic campgrounds are scattered throughout the recreation area, many accessible only by trail — ideal for backpackers who want a wilderness feel without a long drive. Modern camping is also available for those who prefer amenities.
Visit in early October for peak fall color along the trails, or come in late spring when wildflowers carpet the forest floor and the lakes are still uncrowded. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry.
