Brighton State Recreation Area
Michigan (Livingston County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Livingston County, Brighton State Recreation Area spreads across nearly 5,000 acres of southeastern Michigan’s most varied terrain. What sets Brighton apart is its landscape — a glacial legacy of kettle lakes, wooded ridges, and open meadows that feels more like northern Michigan than metro Detroit’s backyard, despite sitting just an hour west of the city.
The park anchors around several lakes, with Bishop Lake and Chilson Pond drawing swimmers, kayakers, and shore anglers through the warmer months. Over 18 miles of trails wind through hardwood forests and grassy hills, serving hikers and mountain bikers in summer and cross-country skiers once snow settles in. Horseback riding trails thread through the southern section, and hunters work the upland fields during fall seasons for small game and deer.
Brighton’s campgrounds offer both modern and rustic options, making it a solid basecamp for weekend trips. The modern sites near Bishop Lake fill fast on summer weekends, so reserving ahead is worth the effort. Rustic sites deeper in the park trade amenities for quiet.
Late September through mid-October is the sweet spot for visiting — the hardwoods light up in color, the summer crowds thin out, and the trails are at their best. Spring wildflower season runs a close second, with trillium and hepatica carpeting the forest floor by late April.
For a state recreation area this close to Ann Arbor and Detroit, Brighton delivers a surprising sense of space and solitude.
