Hayes State Park
Michigan (Lenawee, Jackson, Washtenaw County)
Hayes State Park sits at the intersection of three Michigan counties — Lenawee, Jackson, and Washtenaw — where the Irish Hills region rolls across 654 acres of glacial landscape dotted with lakes, woodlands, and open meadows. The park’s centerpiece is Wamplers Lake, a sizeable all-sports lake that draws swimmers, kayakers, anglers, and pontoon cruisers throughout the warm months.
The beach at Wamplers Lake is one of the park’s biggest draws — a wide, sandy stretch with shallow wading areas that families with young children particularly appreciate. Anglers will find bass, bluegill, and panfish in good supply, and a boat launch provides easy access to the water. Away from the lake, several miles of trails wind through hardwood forest and prairie restoration areas, offering solid hiking and wildlife viewing. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of songbirds are regular sights along the paths.
The campground offers both modern and rustic sites, many of them shaded and reasonably spaced. Waterfront and near-water sites fill up fast during summer weekends, so reserving well in advance is worth the effort. The park also has a picnic area with shelters available for group gatherings.
The best window to visit is late June through early September, when the lake is warm enough for swimming and the campground is fully operational. Fall brings excellent color to the hardwood canopy with far fewer crowds. Hayes State Park is a straightforward, unpretentious destination — perfect for a lake-centered weekend close to the southeastern Michigan population centers.
