Perched on a rugged headland near Coos Bay, Oregon, Cape Arago Light has guided mariners since 1866. The current tower is actually the third on this site, replacing earlier structures lost to erosion. Though decommissioned and closed to the public — with no climbing access — the lighthouse remains a striking subject for photographers. Golden hour light at sunset is ideal, with the dramatic sea cliffs and crashing Pacific waves providing a powerful backdrop. The best vantage point is from the viewpoint along Cape Arago Highway. Nearby, visitors can explore Shore Acres State Park with its famous botanical gardens, Sunset Bay State Park, and the Simpson Reef Overlook, where sea lions and seals gather year-round.
