South Jetty (South Beach)

Where the Yaquina River meets the Pacific Ocean, South Jetty offers one of the Central Oregon Coast’s most dynamic stretches of shoreline. Sitting just north of South Beach State Park near Newport, this area draws visitors who want more than a typical beach day — the massive rock jetty extending into the ocean creates a natural gathering point for wildlife watchers, anglers, and photographers chasing dramatic wave action.

The jetty itself is a favorite spot for crabbing and fishing, with Dungeness crab and surfperch among the common catches. Walk the wide, sandy beach south toward South Beach State Park for miles of uninterrupted coastline, or head north along the jetty for views of the Yaquina Bay Bridge and Newport’s historic Bayfront. Birdwatchers will find brown pelicans, cormorants, and the occasional bald eagle hunting above the surf line.

Beachcombing picks up after winter storms, when agates, shells, and driftwood scatter across the sand. The flat terrain and open sightlines make this an approachable spot for families, though the jetty rocks require sturdy footwear and caution — sneaker waves are a real hazard here.

South Beach State Park, immediately adjacent, offers year-round camping with full hookups and yurt rentals for those wanting to extend the visit.

The best window runs late spring through early fall, when fog burns off by midmorning and winds settle. Winter storms bring their own appeal — just dress for sideways rain and prepare for a show.
