Perched on rugged sandstone cliffs above the Pacific, Shore Acres State Park is one of Oregon‘s most unexpected treasures — a place where formal botanical gardens meet raw coastal drama. Originally the estate of lumber baron Louis Simpson, the park preserves his vision of cultivated beauty set against crashing surf and sculpted sea caves.

The botanical gardens are the centerpiece, featuring two distinct sections: a formal English-style garden with roses, azaleas, and rhododendrons, and a Japanese-inspired garden with a lily pond and carefully placed ornamental plantings. Peak bloom runs from May through September, with the rose garden at its finest in June and July. But the real spectacle may be winter, when massive storm waves explode against the cliffs — some reaching heights of 50 feet or more — drawing photographers and wave-watchers from across the region.

A paved trail follows the clifftop from the gardens to Simpson Beach, a small sheltered cove accessible by stairway. Tide pools dot the rocky shoreline, and gray whales pass offshore during migration seasons in spring and fall. The observation shelter at the cliff’s edge provides a windbreak for storm watching and whale spotting alike.

Shore Acres does not offer camping, but nearby Sunset Bay State Park — just a mile north along the Oregon Coast Trail — has full-service campsites with hot showers.

The park’s famous Holiday Lights display transforms the gardens each year from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve, drawing over 60,000 visitors with elaborate illuminated sculptures and thousands of colored lights. Admission to the light show is free; a $5 parking pass applies year-round.
