Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint
Oregon (South Coast County)
Based on my knowledge of Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint, here’s the description:
Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint sits along Oregon’s rugged southern coast just southwest of Bandon, offering one of the most dramatic coastal panoramas on the entire Pacific seaboard. The viewpoint’s namesake is a massive sea stack that, from the bluff above, bears a striking resemblance to a human face gazing skyward — a formation rooted in a Coquille tribal legend about a young woman named Ewaunna who was turned to stone by an evil spirit.
From the elevated viewing area, visitors look out over a sprawling stretch of beach studded with sea stacks, rocky outcrops, and tidal pools teeming with anemones, sea stars, and hermit crabs. The beach below is accessible and perfect for beachcombing, photography, and tide pool exploration at low tide. Birdwatchers will spot cormorants, pigeon guillemots, and tufted puffins nesting on the offshore rocks, while gray whales pass during their seasonal migrations in winter and spring.
A short trail from the parking area leads to the main overlook, and a longer path winds down to the sand. Dogs are welcome on leash. There is no camping at the viewpoint itself, but nearby Bullards Beach State Park offers full-service campgrounds with yurts, horse camps, and electric hookups just minutes away.
The best time to visit is late spring through early fall for calmer weather, though winter storms deliver spectacular wave action. Arrive near sunset for unforgettable golden light across the sea stacks — this is one of Oregon’s finest spots to end the day.
