Sunset Bay State Park
Oregon (South Coast County)
About This Park
This recreation area is part of Heyburn Lake
Tucked into Oregon’s rugged South Coast, Sunset Bay State Park centers on one of the most sheltered coves along the entire Pacific shoreline. Sandstone cliffs curve around a crescent beach, blocking the open-ocean swells that pound nearby headlands and creating calm, surprisingly swimmable water — a genuine rarity on the Oregon coast.
The bay’s protected waters make it a favorite for families with young kids, kayakers launching for the first time, and tide-poolers exploring the rocky shelves at low tide. Sea stars, anemones, and hermit crabs are reliably abundant in the intertidal zones flanking the beach. Above the waterline, trails wind through coastal forest thick with shore pine and salal, connecting Sunset Bay to its neighbors — Shore Acres State Park and Cape Arago State Park — along a cliff-hugging path with some of the most dramatic ocean views on the South Coast.
The campground sits in a wooded bowl just back from the beach, offering tent sites, full-hookup RV spots, and yurts. Sites fill fast in summer, so reservations are wise from June through September. Off-season camping is quieter and often available on shorter notice, with winter storm-watching from the cliffs providing its own brand of spectacle.
Sunset Bay works as both a destination and a basecamp. The nearby Simpson Reef viewpoint hosts one of the largest colonies of seals and sea lions on the coast, and the botanical gardens at Shore Acres are a short walk or drive away. Come for the cove, stay for everything surrounding it.
