Perched on the southern tip of Conanicut Island in Jamestown, Beavertail State Park occupies 153 acres of dramatic rocky coastline where Narragansett Bay meets the open Atlantic. This is one of Rhode Island’s most spectacular coastal landscapes — a place where waves crash against ancient granite ledges and the views stretch unbroken from Newport Bridge to Block Island on clear days.

The park’s rugged shoreline draws saltwater anglers who cast for striped bass and bluefish from the rocks, while tide pools tucked into the ledges reveal sea stars, crabs, and anemones that make this a favorite spot for families exploring marine life up close. Hiking trails wind along the bluffs, offering some of the finest ocean views in southern New England without the crowds you’ll find at nearby Newport attractions.

The historic Beavertail Lighthouse, one of the oldest light stations in North America, anchors the park’s southern point and houses a small museum worth a visit. At sunset, the lighthouse and surrounding rocks become one of Rhode Island’s most photographed scenes.

Spring and fall deliver the best conditions — comfortable temperatures, fewer visitors, and excellent fishing. Summer brings warmer water temperatures and peak wildflower displays along the trails. Winter storms produce dramatic wave action that draws photographers, though caution near the rocks is essential year-round as rogue waves are a genuine hazard.

Beavertail is a day-use park with no camping facilities. Pack a picnic, bring sturdy shoes for the rocky terrain, and allow at least a couple of hours to explore properly.
