Fort Adams State Park
Rhode Island (Newport County)
Fort Adams State Park sits at the southwestern tip of Aquidneck Island in Newport, where Narragansett Bay meets the East Passage. The park’s 100 acres are anchored by Fort Adams itself — one of the largest coastal fortifications in the United States, with construction spanning from 1824 to 1857. The massive granite-and-brick fort is open for guided tours that wind through tunnels, bastions, and listening galleries, offering a genuinely fascinating look at 19th-century military engineering.
Beyond the fort, this park is all about the water. The shoreline wraps around a rocky point with views stretching across to Jamestown, the Newport Bridge, and the harbor full of sailboats. Fishing is popular along the seawall, and kayakers launch from the small beach on the bay side. The open lawns are perfect for kite-flying, picnicking, or just spreading out with a book while watching boat traffic.
Fort Adams is perhaps best known as the home of the Newport Jazz Festival and the Newport Folk Festival each summer, drawing thousands of music fans to its grounds. Even outside festival weekends, the park buzzes with rugby matches, sailing events, and family outings.
The best time to visit is late May through early October, when the sea breeze keeps things comfortable and all facilities are open. Spring and fall bring fewer crowds and dramatic skies over the bay.
Plan for at least two hours — one for the fort tour, one for exploring the grounds and soaking in the views.
