Fort Wetherill State Park
Perched on the rocky granite cliffs of Jamestown’s southern tip, Fort Wetherill State Park offers 61.5 acres of dramatic coastal scenery overlooking Narragansett Bay and Newport Harbor. The park sits on land that has served as a military defense post since the Revolutionary War, with the imposing concrete fortifications from its World War II era still standing as explorable ruins throughout the grounds.
The real draw here is the coastline. Sheer granite walls drop into deep, clear water, making Fort Wetherill one of the best scuba diving and snorkeling destinations in New England. Divers come for the rocky underwater terrain, diverse marine life, and excellent visibility. For those who prefer to stay above water, the park offers saltwater fishing from the rocks, sea kayaking along the cliff faces, and some of the most photogenic picnic spots in Rhode Island — with unobstructed views across the bay toward the Newport Bridge.
A network of walking trails winds through the property, connecting old battery emplacements, observation towers, and gun casings that history buffs will appreciate. The mix of military ruins and wild coastal landscape gives the park a character unlike any other in the state system.
Fort Wetherill does not offer camping facilities. The park is open year-round, though late spring through early fall is the prime season for water activities and comfortable exploration. Even in winter, the cliff views and empty trails make for a striking visit. Parking is free and the park rarely feels crowded.
