Rising from the waters of Narragansett Bay, Whale Rock Light was constructed in 1882 to guide vessels through the treacherous West Passage. This cast-iron caisson lighthouse served mariners faithfully until the devastating Hurricane of 1938, which destroyed the structure and tragically claimed the life of its keeper, Walter Eberle. The lighthouse was never rebuilt and remains inactive today.

The original foundation is still visible at low tide, making it a poignant historical site. Visitors cannot access or climb the remnants, as they sit offshore on a submerged rock.
