William M. Tugman State Park
Tucked along the shores of Eel Lake near Lakeside on Oregon’s South Coast, William M. Tugman State Park offers a quieter alternative to the heavily visited coastal destinations further north. The park sits just minutes from the Pacific but feels world’s apart — centered on a warm, freshwater lake surrounded by old-growth Douglas fir, western red cedar, and dense coastal forest.
Eel Lake is the main draw. Its calm, relatively warm waters make it one of the better swimming spots on the southern Oregon coast, especially in July and August when lake temperatures climb well above what the ocean ever reaches. Kayaking and canoeing are popular here, and anglers come for bass, bluegill, and yellow perch. A short nature trail winds through the surrounding forest, offering easy walks beneath towering conifers.
The campground provides 94 electrical sites with water hookups, set among the trees with enough spacing to feel private. There are also 16 yurts available for those who want a roof overhead. The sites fill up on summer weekends but rarely hit the reservation crunch you’ll find at places like Honeyman or Sunset Bay.
The best window to visit runs from late June through September, when the lake is warm enough for swimming and rain is least likely. Spring and fall bring solitude and moody skies — ideal if you’re here to paddle or fish rather than sunbathe.
A genuine hidden gem on a coast full of them.
