Tucked into a rugged canyon along the southern Oregon coast, Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area protects two striking waterfalls surrounded by old-growth forest. The park sits about 24 miles northeast of Coos Bay, reached via a winding road through the coastal mountains — a drive that feels increasingly remote as you leave the highway behind.

Golden Falls is the showpiece: a powerful 100-foot cascade that plunges off a basalt ledge into a misty bowl below. Silver Falls, slightly shorter at around 80 feet, fans out more gracefully over a wider rock face. A short trail system connects both falls, with the round-trip hike covering roughly 3 miles through towering Douglas fir, western red cedar, and bigleaf maple. The trails are well-maintained but include some steep sections and exposed roots, so sturdy footwear is worthwhile.

This is a day-use area only — no camping facilities are available on-site. The nearest campgrounds are along the coast near Coos Bay or inland toward the national forest. There are no entrance fees.

The best time to visit is late fall through spring, when winter rains push both falls to their most dramatic volume. Summer visits are pleasant for the cool forest shade, but the falls thin considerably by August. The park sees far fewer visitors than its more famous counterparts in the Columbia River Gorge, making it an excellent stop for anyone exploring the South Coast who wants a waterfall experience without the crowds.
