Milo McIver State Park
Oregon (Portland/Columbia Gorge County)
Milo McIver State Park sits along the banks of the Clackamas River just outside Estacada, about 45 minutes southeast of Portland. The park stretches across forested hills and open meadows, offering a surprising range of activities for a state park this close to the metro area.
The Clackamas River is the main draw. Anglers come for steelhead and salmon runs in spring and fall, with several well-maintained access points along the riverbank. In summer, the river corridor is ideal for rafting and kayaking, with a popular put-in point right in the park. Swimming holes along the river attract families when temperatures climb.
Beyond the water, Milo McIver is home to one of the Pacific Northwest’s most respected disc golf courses — a 27-hole layout that regularly hosts tournaments and draws players from across the region. Equestrian trails wind through the eastern portion of the park, and several miles of hiking paths loop through second-growth Douglas fir forest.
The park offers both tent and RV camping with electrical hookups, plus a group camp area. Sites are shaded and reasonably spaced, though weekends from June through September fill quickly — reserve ahead.
Late spring through early fall is the best window. May and June bring wildflowers and comfortable temperatures before the summer crowds arrive. Fall delivers excellent fishing and quieter trails with changing foliage along the river canyon.
Milo McIver punches above its weight — river access, quality camping, and genuine recreation variety, all within easy reach of Portland.
