Ecorse Range Rear Light

Built in 1894 along the Detroit River in Ecorse, Michigan, this range light guided vessels through the narrow shipping channels of the lower river. Range lights worked in pairs—sailors aligned the front and rear lights to stay on course. The Ecorse Range Rear Light is no longer active and is not open to the public, so visitors cannot climb the tower. However, it remains a notable example of late-19th-century Great Lakes navigational infrastructure. The best photography conditions are during golden hour, when warm light contrasts against the industrial riverfront backdrop. Nearby, visitors can explore the Detroit River waterfront, historic Wyandotte, and the Ford Rouge Factory Tour just minutes north in Dearborn.
