Bird Island Light

Bird Island Light

Buzzards Bay · Massachusetts

Marion, Massachusetts

Rising from a small island in Buzzards Bay, Bird Island Light has guided mariners since 1819, making it one of Massachusetts’ oldest lighthouses. The original stone tower replaced an earlier wooden structure and has witnessed over two centuries of maritime history.

This charming lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, its beacon still serving vessels navigating the bay’s waters. While the island and tower are not open to public access, the lighthouse offers excellent photography opportunities from the water or Marion’s shoreline. Golden hour and sunset provide the most dramatic lighting conditions.

Visitors to Marion can explore the charming village center, Silvershell Beach, and the scenic harbor. Boat tours occasionally pass the island, offering closer views of this historic sentinel.
