Tumalo State Park

Tucked along the banks of the Deschutes River just five miles northwest of Bend, Tumalo State Park is a Central Oregon basecamp that punches well above its weight. The river is the main draw — a stretch of clear, cold water perfect for swimming on scorching high-desert summer days, with gentle sections ideal for tubing and wading with kids.

The park’s trail system connects to the Deschutes River Trail, a paved and gravel path that winds south toward Bend through juniper woodland and basalt canyon walls. Hikers and cyclists use it as a launching point for longer explorations without dealing with downtown trailhead parking. Anglers work the river for rainbow trout and whitefish, particularly in spring and fall when crowds thin out.

Camping here is solid — the park offers full-hookup RV sites, tent sites, and a handful of yurts, all set among mature ponderosa pines that provide genuine shade. Sites fill fast from June through September, so reservations are essential during peak season. The campground stays surprisingly quiet given its proximity to Bend, with the sound of the river filling in the gaps.

The best window is late June through early September for swimming and warm evenings, though May and October reward visitors with smaller crowds and fall color along the river corridor. Winter brings snow-dusted pines and easy access to Mt. Bachelor skiing just 25 miles west.
