Winding 220 miles through Oregon’s pristine Cascade Range, the West Cascades Scenic Byway offers an unforgettable journey from Oakridge to Estacada along the western slopes of the volcanic peaks that define the Pacific Northwest.

This National Scenic Byway immerses travelers in ancient old-growth forests draped in emerald moss, passing crystalline mountain lakes, thundering waterfalls, and hot springs tucked into wilderness settings. The route traverses the Willamette National Forest, where towering Douglas firs and western red cedars create cathedral-like canopies overhead.

Highlights include the stunning Clackamas River corridor, Breitenbush Hot Springs, Detroit Lake for water recreation, and numerous trailheads accessing the Mount Jefferson and Three Sisters wilderness areas. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot elk, black bears, and bald eagles along this remote corridor.

The byway connects charming mountain communities where rustic lodges and local eateries provide warm respites. Numerous campgrounds and day-use areas offer opportunities to explore rushing rivers and alpine meadows blanketed with wildflowers.

Best Time to Visit: Late June through October when high-elevation sections are snow-free and wildflowers bloom.

Allow: Two full days to properly experience the route, with time for short hikes and scenic stops along the way.
