Rising from the heart of Bend, Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint is a 500-foot cinder cone volcano that delivers one of the most accessible panoramic experiences in all of Oregon. From the summit, the entire Cascade Range unfolds before you — Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Broken Top, Mount Bachelor, and Newberry Volcano all visible on a clear day. Few viewpoints anywhere in the Pacific Northwest pack this many peaks into a single vista.

Two routes lead to the top. The paved road spirals to the summit and is open to vehicles seasonally (typically May through September), while the 0.8-mile nature trail climbs the butte’s steeper west face year-round. The trail gains roughly 480 feet of elevation in under a mile — short but genuinely steep, making it a favorite workout spot for Bend locals who tackle it before breakfast. Interpretive signs at the summit identify each visible peak by name and distance.

No camping is available at Pilot Butte itself, but Tumalo State Park sits just five miles northwest with full-service campsites along the Deschutes River. The viewpoint is a day-use area with a small parking lot at the base and another at the summit.

Visit at sunrise or sunset for the best light on the mountains. Summer mornings offer the clearest skies, though winter visits — when snow dusts the surrounding peaks — can be equally striking. The butte sits right off Highway 20 in Bend’s east side, making it an easy stop whether you’re passing through or spending a week exploring Central Oregon.
