Smith Rock State Park
Rising dramatically from the high desert along the Crooked River, Smith Rock State Park is widely regarded as the birthplace of American sport climbing. Its towering tuff and basalt cliffs — some reaching over 600 feet — draw climbers from around the world to more than 2,000 bolted routes spanning every difficulty level. Even if you never clip into a harness, watching climbers scale faces like Monkey Face and the Morning Glory Wall is a spectacle worth the drive alone.
Beyond climbing, the park offers over 8 miles of interconnected trails winding through sagebrush flats and along the river canyon. The Misery Ridge Trail delivers punishing switchbacks rewarded with panoramic views of the Cascade volcanoes — from Mt. Hood to Broken Top. The River Trail provides a gentler option, hugging the Crooked River where anglers cast for rainbow trout and great blue herons wade the shallows.
The park’s bivouac campground offers walk-in tent sites on a first-come, first-served basis — basic but perfectly positioned for early morning starts on the rock. No RV hookups are available, so plan accordingly.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for visiting. Summer temperatures in Central Oregon can push past 100°F, turning south-facing walls into griddles. Winter brings occasional ice climbing conditions, though access can be limited by snow.
Bring sun protection, plenty of water, and sturdy footwear regardless of season. The desert doesn’t forgive poor preparation, but it rewards those who come ready.
