Carved deep into the high desert of Central Oregon, The Cove Palisades State Park sits where three rivers — the Crooked, Deschutes, and Metolius — converge to form Lake Billy Chinook. Towering canyon walls of volcanic basalt rise 800 feet above the turquoise reservoir, creating a landscape that feels more like the Southwest than the Pacific Northwest.

The park is a water lover’s paradise. Lake Billy Chinook stretches across three distinct arms, each offering excellent boating, waterskiing, kayaking, and fishing for kokanee salmon, bull trout, and smallmouth bass. Two full-service marinas rent boats and stock supplies, so you don’t need to haul your own gear.

On land, hikers can tackle the Tam-a-lau Trail, a challenging 8.5-mile loop that climbs to panoramic views of the Cascade peaks — Jefferson, Hood, and the Three Sisters all visible on clear days. The Peninsula, a dramatic mesa jutting between two canyon arms, is one of the most photographed spots in the park.

Camping options include two developed campgrounds with electrical hookups, plus a more secluded group camp. Sites along the Crooked River arm tend to book fast for summer weekends, so reserve early through Oregon State Parks.

Late May through September brings warm, dry weather ideal for swimming and boating, though spring and fall reward visitors with cooler temps and far fewer crowds. Nights here are remarkably dark and quiet — bring a camp chair and look up.
