Robert G. Wehle State Park sits on a stunning peninsula jutting into Lake Ontario in the Thousand Islands region of New York. Opened in 2004, this 1,067-acre park was once the private estate of Robert G. Wehle, a conservationist and dog breeder who preserved the land’s wild character for decades before it became public.

What makes Wehle special is its sense of solitude. Unlike busier state parks, the peninsula setting means you’re surrounded by water on three sides, with dramatic bluff views, cobblestone beaches, and wide-open meadows that feel almost coastal. The park limits daily visitors, so trails stay uncrowded and the landscape retains a quiet, untouched quality rare this close to civilization.

Hiking is the main draw, with roughly 10 miles of trails winding through forests, grasslands, and along the Lake Ontario shoreline. Birdwatching is excellent here — the mix of habitats draws migrating raptors, shorebirds, and grassland species. Fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing round out the year-round options. Dogs are not permitted, a nod to Wehle’s wish to protect the park’s wildlife.
