Standing guard over a dangerous limestone reef in eastern Lake Ontario, East Charity Shoal Light has guided mariners since 1877. This squat, octagonal granite tower was built directly on the shoal — an engineering feat for its era — replacing a simple lightship that previously warned vessels away from the treacherous shallow waters near the St. Lawrence River entrance.

The light remains active and is not open to the public, as it sits offshore with no dock or landing area. It’s best photographed by boat during summer months, when calm lake conditions and golden-hour light create striking compositions.
