Black Walnut Point Natural Resources Management Area
Tucked at the southern tip of Tilghman Island in Talbot County, Black Walnut Point Natural Resources Management Area offers 58 acres of Chesapeake Bay shoreline that most visitors to Maryland’s Eastern Shore never discover. This small but striking parcel sits where the Choptank River meets the Bay, creating a landscape of tidal marshes, mature hardwood forest, and sweeping water views that feel remarkably remote despite being just minutes from the charming village of Tilghman.
Birders consider this one of the premier spots on the Eastern Shore. The point’s position along the Atlantic Flyway makes it a critical stopover for migratory songbirds, raptors, and shorebirds, particularly during spring and fall migration. Warblers, osprey, and bald eagles are regular sightings. A network of short trails winds through the wooded interior and along the shoreline, making for easy but rewarding walks. Anglers can cast from the rocky shoreline for striped bass, white perch, and blue crabs in season.
The area is day-use only with no developed facilities — no restrooms, no picnic tables, no camping. Bring water and anything else you’ll need. The trade-off is solitude; even on weekends, you’re unlikely to share the trails with more than a handful of people.
Visit in September or October for peak bird migration and comfortable temperatures, or in spring when the hardwoods leaf out and osprey return to their nests along the shore. Sunrise here, with mist lifting off the Chesapeake, is worth the early alarm.
