Bill Burton Fishing Pier State Park
Maryland (Dorchester, Talbot County)
Bill Burton Fishing Pier State Park sits where the Choptank River meets the Chesapeake Bay in Dorchester and Talbot Counties, Maryland. Built on the remnants of the old Route 50 bridge, this 24-acre park transforms retired highway infrastructure into one of the Eastern Shore’s most accessible fishing destinations.
The park’s defining feature is its two fishing piers — one extending from each side of the river — giving anglers direct access to deep tidal waters without needing a boat. Striped bass, white perch, bluefish, and blue crabs are common catches depending on the season. The piers are ADA-accessible, making this one of the most inclusive fishing spots on the Chesapeake Bay.
Beyond fishing, the park offers picnic areas with views across the broad Choptank River, bird watching opportunities along the shoreline, and a boat launch for kayakers and small watercraft looking to explore the surrounding marshlands. The park connects to the larger network of Eastern Shore wildlife areas, and osprey, great blue herons, and bald eagles are regular visitors.
Spring through fall delivers the best fishing, with striped bass runs peaking in April and May. Summer brings bluefish and crabs. Even in cooler months, the river views and birdlife make a visit worthwhile.
Expect a no-frills park focused on water access — there are restrooms and parking but no campgrounds. Pack your rod, a cooler, and sunscreen, and plan to spend a few unhurried hours on the pier watching the Choptank roll by.
