Wye Oak State Park
Tucked into the quiet countryside of Talbot County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Wye Oak State Park carries a story unlike any other in the state park system. This intimate 29-acre park was established to protect the Wye Oak — once the largest white oak tree in the United States, standing nearly 100 feet tall with a crown spread of 119 feet. Though a fierce storm toppled the roughly 460-year-old giant in 2002, its legacy lives on through seedlings planted across Maryland and a visit here still feels like a pilgrimage to hallowed ground.
The park sits adjacent to the historic Old Wye Church and the charming town of Wye Mills, giving visitors a layered glimpse into Eastern Shore heritage. A stroll through the grounds reveals the stump site of the original oak, interpretive signage telling its centuries-long story, and successor trees growing in its place. The surrounding landscape is peaceful and unhurried — perfect for a quiet picnic, birdwatching, or simply sitting beneath the canopy and letting the afternoon slow down.
Spring and fall are ideal for visiting, when mild temperatures and softer light make the Eastern Shore countryside especially inviting. Summer brings lush greenery but also humidity typical of the Chesapeake region.
Wye Oak is best experienced as part of a broader Eastern Shore day trip — pair it with a drive through Talbot County’s back roads, a stop at a local crab shack, and a visit to nearby Easton for a full picture of this quietly beautiful corner of Maryland.
