Bald Eagle State Park

Tucked into the ridges of Centre County, Bald Eagle State Park stretches across 5,900 acres along the southern shore of Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir — a 1,730-acre lake that serves as the park’s centerpiece. Established in 1971, the park sits within the Bald Eagle Valley, framed by Bald Eagle Mountain to the south and offering wide-open views of water meeting forested ridgeline.

The reservoir drives most of the action here. Boating, fishing, and swimming draw steady crowds from late spring through early fall, with the guarded beach at the day-use area being a reliable summer destination. Anglers target walleye, muskie, and bass throughout the lake, and the boat launch accommodates everything from kayaks to motorboats with up to unlimited horsepower. Beyond the water, the park maintains several miles of hiking trails that wind through mixed hardwood forests and along the lakeshore, with winter opening up opportunities for cross-country skiing and ice fishing when conditions cooperate.

Birders take note: the park sits along a productive migration corridor, and the reservoir’s edges attract wading birds, waterfowl, and — true to the name — the occasional bald eagle sighting.

The best window for visiting runs from May through October, when the lake is fully accessible and the surrounding mountains cycle through wildflower season into peak fall color.
