Poe Paddy State Park
Pennsylvania (Centre County County)
Tucked into the rugged Bald Eagle State Forest in Centre County, Poe Paddy State Park sits along the banks of Penns Creek — one of Pennsylvania’s most celebrated trout streams. At just 23 acres, this compact park punches well above its weight, offering a distinctive blend of railroad history, fly fishing, and forested solitude that larger parks can’t match.
The park occupies a former railroad grade along the Mid State Trail, and the old Paddy Mountain Tunnel — a dark, dripping passage carved through solid rock — remains one of the most memorable short hikes in central Pennsylvania. Walk through with a flashlight and emerge to views of Penns Creek winding through a steep, hemlock-shaded valley.
Fishing defines Poe Paddy. Penns Creek draws fly anglers from across the Northeast, particularly during the famous green drake hatch in late May and early June. Even if you don’t fish, watching the evening rise from the creekside is worth the trip alone.
The park offers rustic camping with a handful of sites nestled among tall pines near the water — no frills, but the sound of the creek at night more than compensates. Established in 1938, the facilities reflect that old-school CCC-era character that many newer parks lack.
Visit in late spring for the hatches and wildflowers, or in October when the surrounding mountains blaze with color. Summer brings warm-water wading and swimming holes. Roads in are narrow and winding, so come prepared for a true backcountry feel — that remoteness is exactly the point.
