Angel Island State Park

Angel Island State Park

Tiburon, California (Marin and San Francisco County)

4.8 (2,327 reviews)

Rising from the shimmering waters of San Francisco Bay, Angel Island State Park offers 756 acres of natural beauty, rich history, and panoramic views that rival any in the Bay Area. Accessible only by ferry from Tiburon or San Francisco, the island’s car-free environment creates an immediate sense of escape just minutes from the city.

What Makes It Special

Angel Island holds layers of California history within its shores. The island served as a Civil War military outpost, a quarantine station, and most notably as the “Ellis Island of the West” — the Immigration Station that processed hundreds of thousands of immigrants, primarily from Asia, between 1910 and 1940. Today, visitors can tour the restored Immigration Station and view the poetry carved into barrack walls by detained immigrants.

Activities

The island rewards exploration on foot or by bike. A 5-mile perimeter road loops around the island with stunning views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and Mount Tamalpais. Hiking trails lead to Mount Livermore’s 788-foot summit, where 360-degree views encompass the entire Bay Area. Kayaking, picnicking, and wildlife watching round out the offerings.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early fall brings the clearest skies and warmest temperatures. Weekday visits avoid ferry crowds.

What to Expect

Pack layers — bay breezes keep temperatures cool year-round. Bring food and water, as services are limited. With a 4.8-star rating from over 2,300 visitors, Angel Island consistently delivers an unforgettable Bay Area experience.
