Located at the northern tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula near Mackinaw City, The Headlands Dark Sky Park earned its International Dark-Sky Park designation in 2011, making it one of the premier stargazing destinations in the Midwest.

The park’s 600 acres offer exceptionally dark skies with minimal light pollution, providing ideal conditions for observing the Milky Way’s galactic core, Andromeda Galaxy, and numerous deep-sky objects including nebulae and star clusters. On clear nights, visitors can expect naked-eye limiting magnitudes approaching 6.5 or better.

Best Viewing Times: Late summer through fall offers optimal conditions, with August providing prime Milky Way visibility and Perseid meteor shower viewing. Arrive at least an hour after sunset to allow full dark adaptation.

Facilities: The park features two dedicated observation decks, accessible pathways, and warming shelters. A dark-sky-compliant guest house accommodates overnight visitors.

Equipment: Bring binoculars at minimum; telescopes enhance the experience significantly. Red flashlights are essential for preserving night vision.

Programs: Park staff host regular astronomy programs, and local astronomy clubs frequently organize public star parties throughout the observing season.
