Tybee Island Light

Standing sentinel over Tybee Island, Georgia, this historic lighthouse has guided mariners since 1773, making it one of America’s first light stations. The original tower was among several commissioned during the colonial era, and the current structure has survived wars, storms, and centuries of coastal change. Still an active navigational aid, the Tybee Island Light is not currently open to public climbing. Photographers will find golden hour particularly rewarding, when warm light illuminates the tower against the Atlantic horizon — fall and winter offer fewer crowds and dramatic skies. Nearby, visitors can explore Tybee’s beaches, Fort Screven’s historic batteries, and the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, all within easy walking distance of the lighthouse grounds.
