Rising from the shallow waters of Mississippi Sound, the Merrill Shell Bank Light was constructed in 1860 to guide vessels navigating the treacherous shoals between the Gulf barrier islands and the Mississippi coastline. The screwpile lighthouse served maritime traffic through the Civil War era and beyond before eventually being deactivated. Today the structure is not open to the public and cannot be climbed, though it remains a compelling sight from the water. Photographers will find the best light during golden hour, when the tower silhouettes against Gulf sunsets. Nearby attractions include the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Ship Island ferry excursions from Gulfport, and the charming waterfront communities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
