Rising from the shallow waters of Lake Borgne, Mississippi, this screw-pile lighthouse was built in 1889 to guide vessels navigating the treacherous passage between the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Pontchartrain. The hexagonal wooden structure stood on iron pilings driven into the lake bed, a common design for Southern coastal lights of the era. Deactivated and no longer maintained, the lighthouse is not open to the public and cannot be climbed. It is best viewed and photographed by boat during golden hour, when warm light reflects off the surrounding water. Nearby attractions include the Mississippi Gulf Islands National Seashore, the fishing villages of the Jourdan River area, and the casinos and seafood restaurants of the Biloxi coast.
