New Canal Light stands at the entrance to New Canal in New Orleans, Louisiana, marking where Lake Pontchartrain meets the 17th Street Canal. Originally built in 1839 to guide vessels into the New Basin Canal, the lighthouse has been rebuilt several times, most recently after Hurricane Katrina devastated the structure in 2005. The current reconstruction serves as a museum operated by the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation. No longer an active aid to navigation, the lighthouse is not open for climbing. Its lakefront setting offers excellent photography during golden hour, with dramatic sunset views over the lake. Nearby, visitors can explore the Lakeshore Drive promenade, West End dining district, and City Park, all within a short drive.
