Built in 1856 in Leonardo, New Jersey, the Chapel Hill Rear Range Light served as part of a range light system guiding vessels safely through Sandy Hook Bay into New York Harbor. Paired with a front range light, mariners aligned the two beacons to navigate the channel. The lighthouse was decommissioned and is no longer active.

The tower is not open to the public and cannot be climbed, but its historic structure makes it a worthwhile stop for lighthouse enthusiasts and photographers. Late afternoon light offers the best conditions for exterior shots. Nearby attractions include Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area, Twin Lights Historic Site in Highlands, and the scenic beaches along the Jersey Shore.
