Cheesequake State Park sits at a remarkable ecological crossroads in Old Bridge Township, New Jersey, where the northern and southern botanical zones of the state overlap. Established in 1940 and spanning 1,610 acres, this park is one of the few places where you can walk from a northeastern hardwood forest into a Pine Barrens cedar swamp within a single hike — a transition that typically takes hours of driving along the Garden State Parkway.
Five well-marked trails wind through surprisingly diverse terrain: freshwater and saltwater marshes, a white cedar swamp, pine-oak forest, and open fields. The short but rewarding Green Trail loops through the cedar swamp on boardwalks, while the longer Blue and Red trails offer more challenging woodland hikes with moderate elevation changes. Hooks Creek Lake provides a sandy swimming beach popular with families from late May through Labor Day, along with fishing and crabbing opportunities in the tidal marshes.
The park sits just off the Garden State Parkway at Exit 120, making it one of the most accessible natural areas in central New Jersey — a genuine escape that’s under an hour from both Manhattan and Philadelphia. Spring wildflower displays and fall foliage are standout seasons, though summer draws the biggest crowds to the lake beach.
Birdwatchers will find the marsh edges particularly rewarding, with herons, egrets, and ospreys regularly spotted along Hooks Creek. The park’s unusual name comes from the Lenape word meaning “upland,” a fitting description for this quietly remarkable landscape where two worlds meet.
