Standing guard over Lower New York Bay since 1901, West Bank Light is a distinctive sparkplug-style lighthouse built to guide vessels through the busy Ambrose Channel approach to New York Harbor. The cast-iron caisson tower rises from the water itself, making it one of the region’s most recognizable offshore sentinels. Still an active aid to navigation, the lighthouse is not open to the public and cannot be climbed. The best photography opportunities come during golden hour from nearby Staten Island shorelines or by boat. Visitors to the area can explore Fort Wadsworth, the Staten Island waterfront, and Gateway National Recreation Area, all offering excellent vantage points of this enduring maritime landmark.
