Caribou Falls State Wayside
Minnesota (Lake County)
Caribou Falls State Wayside sits along the North Shore of Lake Superior in Lake County, Minnesota, offering one of the most rewarding short hikes on the entire shore. Established in 1947, this compact wayside park centers on Caribou Falls, where the Caribou River plunges through a dramatic gorge of dark volcanic rock before continuing its rush toward Lake Superior.
The main trail to the falls is roughly a half-mile out and back, descending through a dense boreal forest of birch, spruce, and cedar. The path narrows as it drops toward the gorge, and the final approach rewards hikers with a striking view of the falls cascading over layered rock formations. In spring, snowmelt transforms the river into a thundering force. By late summer, the flow gentles and exposes more of the gorge’s layered geology.
Beyond the main falls, a less-traveled spur trail follows the river upstream to additional cascades that most visitors miss entirely. The upper falls are quieter, more secluded, and worth the extra effort on uneven terrain.
There are no campgrounds within the wayside itself, but nearby Tettegouche and Temperance River State Parks offer full camping facilities just minutes up Highway 61. The wayside has a small parking area that fills quickly on summer weekends, so arriving early or visiting midweek is worthwhile.
Fall color season, typically late September through early October, is the best time to visit, when the birch canopy turns gold against the dark basalt gorge.
